Some highlights from the last game vs Eclipse.
It was a well-fought, very intense rematch between the Michigan Hawks and Eclipse SC. The two teams had met just three weeks before where Eclipse had won 1-0 on a penalty kick late in the game. But it was the Hawks who had reclaimed the title in the quarterfinals in San Diego this past weekend.
Both teams were ready to play, and showed that early on in the game. But around the middle of the first half, Mac Midgely played a perfect ball to Sammi Woods on the left. Woods then cut it back to her right foot and with the help of the wind, curled it in to help the Hawks take the 1-0 lead.
Just minutes later, Eclipse earned a corner kick. With two players on the ball, they dribbled toward the net and tapped one in to tie the game at 1-1.
With the first half coming to a close, both teams were getting lots of chances. But with minutes left, Brooke Steere drew a foul in the box that also earned the Eclipse defender a red card. Sammi Woods stepped up to take the kick and tucked it into the right corner of the net. The Hawks celebrated their 2-1 lead with their club at the corner of the field.
With the 2-1 lead at half, the Hawks had to manage the game. But soon into the second half, Eclipse slipped ball in the box to again tie the game 2-2.
The rest of regulation time was intense, but neither team could get that third goal in. The game was going to overtime.
The Hawks had the kickoff to start. The ball was knocked around the Eclipse defenders right away. Ella Young drove a ball wide to Gigi Gallete on the right side of the field who took the bouncing ball right out of the air. Gallete crossed the ball right to the feet of Sammi Woods, who also took it from the air and tucked it in the far post to reclaim the lead at 3-2 seconds into overtime.
Just a few minutes later, Brooke Steere made a hard run up the right flank of the field and drew another foul about 25 yards from the net. Steere was very impactful in earning two of the Hawks’ goals. But it was Aidan McConnell who stepped up. McConnell chipped the ball with perfect pace and precision to sneak it right over the goalie to bump the lead up to 4-2.
But just before the first overtime was played, there was a foul by Sammi Woods in the box that earned Eclipse a penalty kick. They lowered the Hawks lead to 4-3 with 10 minutes left of the game.
The last segment of overtime was a nail-biter as Eclipse had numerous opportunities to level the score. But thanks to the stingy defense and goalkeeper Sara Wojdelko, the Hawks managed to stay on top. Wojdelko had two or three huge saves in the last minutes of the match to help the Hawks win the game.
